Even when I know a few men who help their wives with the household work, I am prejudiced to think that men don’t or hesitate to help and go that far. It might be because of the fact that I also know many a men who will always search for their wives even do a small bit. They’ll always leave everything on their wives just because they are wives! However, a new study shows that unlike married men, men who are sharing a room with the other sex or are in live-in relationships tend to do much more household work, thus, sharing more responsibilities. Does that give us a reason to opt for live-in relationships? Hmmm...I’ll have to think over that!
Also, the co-author of the study who is also an assistant professor of sociology at George Mason University, in Fairfax, Virginia, Shannon Davis, said that much of the behavior can be accredited solely to the beliefs of the man himself. Davis said,
Individuals who have these beliefs that women and men should both take equal responsibility for what happens in the home and for providing for the home tend to share more housework. That’s consistent for both the co-habiting couples and the married couples.
Thus, basically, the egalitarian belief of a man plays the main role in changing his behavior and lifestyle. The research was conducted across 28 countries and 17,000 people were asked two questions - ‘On average, how many hours do you personally spend on housework,’ and ‘On average, how many hours does your partner spend on housework?’ The result showed that men with an egalitarian belief did greater amount of work as compared to other men. Also, most of such men were in live-in relationships. If it is the culture and traditions that let men be the boss or their personal beliefs, the question cannot have an accurate answer ever, but I am sure the matrimonial from me, with the other usual conditions will certainly read, ‘having egalitarian beliefs’. The hunt is on...
